Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Prospect? We Have Answers.

These are the most common questions we hear before someone’s first class. Still have something on your mind? Call us at 040-203-7161

What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and traditional jujitsu?

Traditional jujitsu originated in Japan and includes a wide range of striking, throwing, and joint-locking techniques, some of which were designed for armed or armoured combat. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu developed from a refined subset of those techniques — primarily ground grappling and submission holds — and was further evolved in Brazil with a strong emphasis on leverage, positional control, and practical sparring. BJJ is distinct in its deep focus on mat work and its culture of live rolling, which allows students to test techniques at full intensity in a safe environment.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu useful in a real fight?

Yes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is widely regarded as one of the most practical martial arts for real self-defense situations. Because most physical altercations end up on the ground, BJJ’s focus on grappling, control, and submissions gives practitioners a significant advantage. It teaches you to manage and neutralise a threat without relying on strikes or raw strength — skills that are equally valuable for adults and for children dealing with bullying situations.

Is BJJ the hardest martial art to learn?

BJJ has a reputation for a steep learning curve, particularly in the early stages, but that’s part of what makes it so rewarding. The complexity of positions, transitions, and submissions means there is always something new to learn — which keeps students engaged for years. At our academy in Prospect, beginners are guided through a structured, progressive curriculum so the challenge always feels manageable, no matter where you start.

What makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Prospect worth joining?

Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Prospect are built around structured, results-driven training for all ages — from preschoolers to adults. We have dedicated programs for kids, teens, and adults, black belt instructors who genuinely invest in their students, and an ego-free environment where beginners feel welcome from day one. Parents consistently notice real changes in their children’s focus and confidence within the first 60 days.

Does BJJ rely more on technique or strength?

Technique. That is one of BJJ’s most defining qualities. The art was developed specifically so that a smaller, less physically powerful person can control or submit a larger, stronger opponent using leverage, timing, and positional awareness. Strength can help, but it is never a requirement — which is exactly why BJJ works so well for children, teens, and adults of all fitness levels.

How long does it take to earn belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Prospect?

Progression depends on consistency, effort, and the individual student. For adults training around 3 times per week, the first belt typically comes within 2 months of dedicated training. The full journey from white belt to black belt generally takes around 10 years for committed students. Kids follow a separate belt system with more frequent milestones designed to keep them motivated as they develop. At our Prospect academy, belt criteria are clear and transparent — you’ll always know what you’re working toward.

What should a beginner expect in their first BJJ class?

Expect a welcoming, low-pressure environment. You’ll start with a warm-up, followed by technique instruction covering fundamental positions and movements. There’s no expectation to know anything in advance — our instructors will guide you through everything step by step. You may observe or lightly participate in drilling, and you will not be thrown into competitive sparring on your first visit. Most new students leave their first class surprised by how much they enjoyed it.

Is BJJ effective for self-defense?

Absolutely. BJJ is one of the most proven self-defense systems in the world. Its focus on controlling and neutralising an opponent on the ground — where most real confrontations end up — makes it highly practical. Students learn to manage threatening situations calmly and effectively, without relying on aggression or strikes. This makes it an excellent self-defense foundation for both children and adults.

What equipment or gear is needed for BJJ training?

For your first trial class, all you need is comfortable athletic clothing — a rash guard or t-shirt and shorts or leggings are ideal. If you decide to continue, you will eventually need a gi (a BJJ-specific uniform) for gi classes and a rash guard and shorts for no-gi sessions. Mouth guards and ear guards are also recommended as training progresses. Our team will guide you on what to purchase and when.

What is the difference between gi and no-gi BJJ?

Gi BJJ is practised wearing a traditional uniform called a gi, which introduces a whole layer of grip-based techniques using the collar, sleeves, and lapels. No-gi BJJ is practised in rash guards and shorts, removing those grips and placing greater emphasis on body control, underhooks, and speed. Both styles complement each other — gi training builds patience and precision, while no-gi sharpens athleticism and adaptability. At our Prospect academy, we offer both so students can develop a well-rounded game.
